everybody has a story to tell about their life

Janet’s milk round before school

Janet Chadband and Dennis Knight, 2013

Barbara – Interviewer: What about when you were a little girl growing up at the Farm then, Archer Farm.?

Janet: Well I wasn’t so little then Barb, I was 10 nearly11 when we came to live, what about it, um

Barbara – Interviewer: I bet you used to get up early in the morning to get everything done.

Janet: Well yes, had to, we had to be ready for the milk round by about half past 8, to start the milk round. We weren’t allowed to be late for school but we had to do so much of the milk round before we went to school, so often milk was delivered at the rate of knots. Measured out of the can or left it out. One old dear, Miss Lewis, remember her up front hill ?

Dennis: Oh ya.

Janet: Anyway she had a can that wasn’t tight lidded and the slugs used to get in at night, I don’t think the can was very clean, and I used to knock the door but there was no answer so well I had to leave the milk so in went the milk never hurt anything.

Barbara – Interviewer: So how did you carry the milk around?

Janet: I gallon, 2 gallon and 3 gallon cans.

Barbara – Interviewer: You carried them !!

Janet: How do you think I got long arms.
