A Survivor’s Tale: Don Trayhurn
Lance Corporal 14316026 Don Trayhurn survived the war, where he was attached as an RASC Driver to 31st Tank Brigade in 79th Armoured Division. This was a Specialist Division handling the modified tanks known as ‘Hobart’s Funnies’. 31st brigade was equipped with Crocodile Flamethrower Tanks, which saw much service in Northern France and Germany. Don witnessed the surrender of German Forces on Luneberg Heath, and a short while later his brigade was sent to nearby Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp to burn down the empty huts to stop the spread or Typhus and deal with the louse infestation.
