Withy Gardens
Ian Honey: At the Mill pool halfway up Church Hill, inland a few hundred yards, there was a pool they used to keep withy gardens and these withies were annual cut to make lobster pots. Each fisherman had a little plot of his own withies. As required he would go up and cut them, bring them back and work them into the lobster pots in preparation for the next season.
There was also another larger withy garden at Port Gaverne which a lot of the Port Gaverne fishermen as well as the Port Isaac men shared. At the moment none of those exist. They stopped using the withies and the trees died. The withy pools filled in with mud and it’s now just a piece of waste land.
